One of the books of the Bible there is book named "Proverbs" written
by the King Solomon. Being a Christian, we are frequently quoting from
this book in order to apply it in our everyday life, as adages.

For instance, we find the following verse in Proverbs 27:17 (KJV)
"Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his
friend."
We apply this passage to us when we are arguing over something with
someone, in that case we should do it for the intent of uplifting another,
not proving one right or wrong. Somehow, it makes sense.

If we go further down a little, we will see verse 22 which reads:
"Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle,
yet will not his foolishness depart from him."

Maybe we can apply this verse some cases like our desirable attitudes during
discussions, but that is not clear enough. It is very difficult to know what
the Bible really wants to say.
This verse is given to us for about 3000 years, but yet we do not know the
meaning of this verse.
What's the use of the Bible if we do not know the meanings?
Then what will be the real meaning of this verse?

Basically, all the Scriptures verses talk about Jesus, the salvation.
And they are not meant to teach how to live well and wisely in the world.

[Jn 5:39-40]
39/ Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life:
and they are they which testify of me. 40/ And ye will not come to me,
that ye might have life.

Therefore, the following verses also are about Jesus.
First :
[Pr 27:17]
Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance
of his friend.

God and Man are different each other. God has no flesh, but man has flesh.
Jesus, even if he is God, has flesh like man. He is a man, our brethren.

[Dt 18:18]
I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee,
and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all
that I shall command him.

[Ro 8:3]
For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh,
God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin,
condemned sin in the flesh:

This Jesus saves us, i.e. a man saves man.
This is what "iron sharpens iron" means.

"a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."
Here 'a man' refers to Jesus Christ who came in the flesh in this world.
'sharpens' refers to save, or make born again, heal, etc.
'countenance of his friend' refers to 'friend himself'.
In fact, Jesus saved his disciples by making them his friends.

[Jn 15:15]
Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his
lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard
of my Father I have made known unto you.

And below is the one of examples that countenance of his friend was sharpened.

[Ac 4:13]
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that
they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took
knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

Second :
[Pr 27:22]
Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle,
yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

Of course, Jesus could speak this to Pharisees, but Pharisees are
the representation of all mankind.  So this is God's speaking to all the mankind.

'A fool' does not mean a man who has below standard IQ, but a man who is
separated from God, the source of wisdom. 'Mortar' refers to the law and/or
regulation, the box/frame which men should go in. 'Pestle' refers to the
commands that ask men to keep the law, i.e., to go into the box.
'braying a fool in a mortar among wheat with
a pestle 'refers to the picture of pressing people to keep the laws.

[Mt 23:4]
For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on
men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their
fingers.

This is what Pharisees did, but not limited to them, we also are doing the
same thing now. For instance, "Love your neighbor as yourself!" This is
the law for us to keep, and it works as mortars. Everyday we are
commanded/command to press in to love our neighbor in schools, the churches
or elsewhere. We are "braying a fool (each other) in a mortar among wheat
with a pestle" in this sense. So we are contemporary Pharisees.

Nevertheless, "his foolishness will not depart from him."
No matter how hard we may try to love our neighbors according to the law,
we are unable to do that ever.

We are having a hard time by pestle like a grain in the mortar. And yet we
cannot love. Our foolishness does not depart from us.

[Ro 3:20]
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight:
for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

In order to make depart the foolishness from us, we have to be one with God,
the source of wisdom, by the salvation of Jesus Christ. That is the only way.
Then, our foolishness will depart from us forever, and we will be able to love
our neighbors.
Do we know this Jesus Christ, a man?

We should have eyes to read the Proverbs in the Bible.
